Holy $#@~!^&, watching you rosin the bow, and i suspect bodgers were rosining springpole and bow lathes long before anyone put it on a musical instrument bow.

One interesting idea from this video that I got is that the tool bit helps to support the workpiece while cutting. Any thoughts?

Watching the turning I couldn't help but think that by adding an intermediate 'wheel', or two, you could gear up the lathe, increasing its rpm or reducing the number of bow strokes. Any evidence of treadles used to power lathes, make life easier if you had both hands free? I know it's not about making life easier necessarily but I'm pretty sure the 'ancients' would if they could. Love your videos.

Thanks for sharing this skill with us Chris. I had to give up wood work as it kept giving me bronchitis. This technique may be a method for me to make turned wooden items without the health risk. It looks like a fun experiment to try out.

Awesome work! Have you tried using more of a gouge shaped chisel to start turning the work round? That's what is typically used on a pole lathe when first shaping a billet. Maybe at this size it doesn't matter?

You need a lathe to make a lathe. So where did the first lathe come from? Now we know; Chris made it.

Turning ebony on my lathe seems like turning a soft metal. It can be polished to a high degree too. Hmm, perhaps you might visit Richard Raffin someday.

Used to watch a guy that turned on a foot operated none power lathe very interesting.
